I went through a tough time when I first recognized that I’d been abused and really wanted some support, but I was convinced that I couldn’t afford counseling. A friend of mine found a low-cost local organization that charged a sliding scale. Even though I could only afford to go for a short time, it got me through a rough period.
Family and friends are the best for recommending understanding therapists. If they don’t know then check if there’s an information referral service in your area that can direct you to counseling facilities. If not, the phone book or the Internet should have local organizations that offer mental health services. Even if they can’t help you directly, they’ll probably be able to refer you to a place that can.

- Psychology Today has a therapist database that covers the United States and Canada.
- The American Psychological Association also has a therapist database that covers American and Canadian therapists.
- For those living outside of North America, do a search on Google for “therapist directory” and your country (for instance, “therapist directory Italy”).
